How this calculator works
Most water softeners leave the factory on generic default settings that rarely match the water in your home. Set the hardness too low and the resin exhausts before it regenerates, so hard water slips through; set it too high, or regenerate too often, and you waste salt and water every cycle. This calculator turns three numbers you can measure or estimate — your water hardness, your dissolved iron level, and your daily water use — into settings tuned to your situation instead.
The math is standard water-treatment practice, not a black box. It converts your hardness to grains per gallon, adds iron compensation at roughly five grains per gallon for every part per million of dissolved iron, and estimates the grains your softener must remove each day. From your tank size it works out a usable grain capacity, then sets a regeneration frequency that aims for efficient operation — regenerating about weekly rather than daily — along with a salt dose, reserve capacity, and a full set of cycle times. For Fleck valves it prints those as a personalized version of the SXT parameter table you can enter directly.
Treat the results as a well-reasoned starting point, not gospel. They assume a typical single-tank, downflow residential softener with standard resin, and they're only as good as the numbers you feed in — which is why a real water test always beats the ZIP-code estimate. Unusual plumbing, very high iron, twin-tank or commercial systems, and manufacturer-specific quirks can all shift the ideal settings.
