How to Clean a Brine Tank

The brine tank is the plastic bin where you pour salt. It quietly collects grit and sludge over the years, and that buildup is a leading cause of a softener that stops making brine and lets hard water slip through. Cleaning it out is a straightforward afternoon job with a bucket and a scrub brush — here's how to do it without creating new problems.

Why it needs cleaning

Even good salt carries a small fraction of insoluble impurities. Those settle at the bottom as sediment or a mushy layer, and cheaper rock salt leaves far more behind than clean pellets. Two problems follow: a salt bridge, a hard crust that spans the tank and leaves an air gap so the salt above never reaches the water, and mushing, recrystallized salt sludge that blocks the brine from being drawn. In both cases the softener runs its regeneration cycles but makes little or no real brine, and your water gradually goes hard again. How often

Give the tank a quick look every month when you top up salt. Plan a full clean-out every one to five years — closer to yearly if you use rock salt or have heavy use, and less often if you stick to clean evaporated pellets. Also clean it whenever you switch salt types or notice sludge, mush, or a persistent bridge. It's easiest to do when the salt has run low, so time it for then if you can.

Step by step

  1. Put the softener in bypass (or unplug it and skip regenerations), and write down your current settings first so nothing is lost.
  2. Scoop out any remaining loose salt into a bucket so you can reuse the clean pellets afterward.
  3. Break up and remove any salt bridge or hardened crust — a broom handle helps, and a little warm water softens stubborn chunks.
  4. Drain the water at the bottom. For a small tank, lift it out and tip it; for a larger one, siphon it or use a wet/dry vacuum.
  5. Remove the brine grid or plate (if your tank has one) and lift out the brine well — the tall tube that houses the float assembly — and set both aside.
  6. Scrub the inside with warm water and a squirt of dish soap, then rinse. To sanitize, use a dilute solution of unscented household bleach — about 1 to 2 tablespoons per gallon of water — scrub, and then rinse thoroughly.
  7. Clean the brine well, the float, and the brine valve and refill port, checking for grit or debris. A stuck float or clogged refill is a common cause of an overfilled tank, so this step is worth doing carefully.
  8. Reassemble everything. If your owner's manual calls for it, add a few gallons of clean water back to the tank, then refill with good-quality salt and take the unit out of bypass.
  9. Run a manual regeneration and watch it: the brine should draw down and the tank should refill to the correct level, which confirms the injector, drain line, and brine valve are all working.

Two safety notes

Never mix bleach with a resin cleaner or iron-out product — some combinations release harmful gas. And dispose of the salty drain water sensibly: it harms lawns and gardens, and large volumes may run afoul of local drain rules. Take care lifting a heavy, water-filled tank; drain it first if you can.
