Water Softener FAQ

Is softened water safe to drink?

For most healthy adults, yes. Ion exchange swaps hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium, so softened water is not "salty" — it just contains slightly more sodium than the hard water it replaced. The amount depends on how hard your water was. People on strict low-sodium diets, and anyone mixing infant formula, often keep a hard-water or filtered tap for drinking and cooking, or use potassium chloride instead of salt. If in doubt, ask your doctor.

How much sodium does a water softener add to my water?

Softening adds roughly 7.5 mg of sodium per liter for every grain per gallon of hardness removed (about 0.44 mg per liter for each 1 PPM). So water at 15 GPG gains around 110–115 mg of sodium per liter, and an 8-ounce glass gains under 30 mg. That is still well below the sodium in most everyday foods, but it adds up for people counting sodium closely. Potassium chloride avoids added sodium entirely.

How much salt will my softener use?

A typical household uses about 40–60 lbs of salt per month, though it varies widely with your hardness, water use, and how the unit is dosed. Harder water and larger households use more. An accurate hardness setting and correct sizing keep salt use down — a badly set unit can easily use twice what it needs. The calculator on the home page estimates your salt use and cost.

How often should a water softener regenerate?

For most homes, about once a week is the efficient target. Daily regeneration wastes salt and water; going two or three weeks lets exhausted resin sit and can cause channeling and hardness breakthrough. Metered (demand-initiated) valves regenerate based on actual water use, so they self-adjust — the key is entering the right hardness and capacity so the timing lands near weekly.

How long does a water softener last?

A good residential softener commonly lasts 10–20 years. The resin bed itself typically lasts 10–15 years, less on heavily chlorinated city water or high iron. Control valves can be rebuilt with seal and piston kits, and resin can be replaced, so many units are worth repairing rather than replacing outright.

What size water softener do I need?

Size it to your daily hardness load so it regenerates about weekly. Multiply the number of people by roughly 75 gallons per person per day, then by your compensated hardness in grains per gallon, to get grains removed per day; a week of that is the capacity you want between regenerations. Does a water softener remove iron?

It removes modest amounts of dissolved (ferrous) iron — the kind that looks clear at the tap but rusts on standing — usually up to about 1–3 PPM. It does not handle already-oxidized (ferric) "red-water" iron, manganese, or sulfur smell well. Above the softener's limit you need a dedicated iron filter installed ahead of the softener.

Can I water plants or fill a fish tank with softened water?

It is best not to. The extra sodium in softened water can build up in soil and stress many plants, and it is not ideal for aquariums. Most installers leave an outdoor spigot and sometimes the kitchen cold tap plumbed with unsoftened water for exactly these uses.

What is the difference between GPG and PPM?

They are two units for the same thing. Grains per gallon (GPG) is the U.S. water-treatment standard and what most softener controllers expect; parts per million (PPM), or milligrams per liter, is what lab and city water reports usually use. To convert, 1 GPG equals 17.1 PPM — divide PPM by 17.1 to get GPG.

Is a salt-free "water conditioner" the same as a softener?

No. Salt-free conditioners (often template-assisted crystallization) change how scale forms so less of it sticks to surfaces, but they do not remove hardness — you won't get the soft-water feel or use less soap. A true softener removes the calcium and magnesium by ion exchange. Conditioners can be a reasonable choice if your only concern is scale or you must avoid sodium.
