Choosing Water Softener Salt
Every bag on the store shelf will soften your water, so the choice can feel arbitrary. It isn't. A softener uses salt only to make brine, the strong solution that recharges the resin during regeneration. The salt you pour in never touches your drinking water directly — but its type and purity decide how often you clean the brine tank, how likely the salt is to jam, and whether the valve's delicate injector stays clear. Here's how the common options actually differ.
What salt does — and doesn't — change
It helps to be clear about what salt controls. The salt does not make your water any softer; the resin does that through ion exchange, and a higher-purity salt won't drop your hardness reading any closer to zero. What salt purity governs is everything that happens inside the brine tank: how much insoluble residue settles at the bottom, how readily the salt forms a crust or turns to sludge, and how much grit ends up circulating toward the valve. Cleaner salt means fewer tank cleanings and less risk of a fouled injector — the part most likely to clog on a modern softener.
The four types compared
Almost every product falls into one of four categories. The table sums up how they stack up on the things that matter; the notes below add the detail.

- Evaporated salt pellets are the purest sodium chloride you can buy, typically 99.6–99.9% NaCl with very little insoluble matter. They leave the least residue and carry the lowest bridging risk, which makes them the sensible default — especially for compact all-in-one cabinet softeners and any unit that has a history of bridging. They are the priciest of the sodium options, but the reduction in tank maintenance usually earns the difference back.
- Solar salt is made by evaporating seawater in open ponds and comes as crystals or pellets. Its purity is high but sits a notch below evaporated salt, so it offers strong value while leaving a little more residue over the months. It's a reasonable choice for most standard softeners in a dry location.
- Rock salt is mined from underground deposits and is the cheapest option, but it carries the most insoluble impurities — dirt and sediment that settle in the brine tank and can work their way into the injector and valve. That means more frequent tank cleaning and a real risk of fouling, so it's generally not recommended for modern valves.

When potassium chloride makes sense
Potassium chloride (KCl) is roughly 99% pure and swaps potassium for sodium in the ion-exchange process, so it genuinely cuts the amount of sodium added to your softened water. That makes it worth considering if you're limiting dietary sodium, or if you have a septic system or discharge concerns where less sodium is a plus. The catches are practical. KCl costs several times more than sodium chloride, and it's less efficient — you typically program your hardness value about 10–20% higher, or select the unit's dedicated KCl setting, so the softener uses more of it per regeneration. It also tends to bridge more readily and absorbs moisture, so it needs to be kept dry and used steadily rather than left to sit.
Bridging vs. mushing
These are the two ways salt fails you, and they're often confused. A salt bridge is a hard crust that spans the tank and leaves an air gap beneath it, so the salt piled on top never reaches the water. The softener keeps running regenerations, but with no salt dissolving it makes no real brine — and your water quietly goes hard again. Mushing is different: recrystallized salt collects as a sludge at the bottom of the tank and blocks the brine from flowing. High-impurity salt and a humid location make both problems worse, which is another reason to favor cleaner salt and a dry spot.
Good salt habits
- Keep the brine tank in a dry spot — humidity is what turns loose salt into a crust.
- Keep salt above the water line, but don't pack the tank to the very top; about two-thirds full is a good target.
- Let the salt run lower occasionally so the older salt at the bottom actually gets used rather than caking.
- If you suspect a crust, push a broom handle down through the salt to break it up before it sets hard.
Switching brands or types
You can change salt types or brands whenever you like — there's no need to empty the tank first, and mixing what's already in there with a new bag does no harm as long as both are softener salt. Moving between evaporated and solar salt is seamless. The one switch that needs a settings change is going to or from potassium chloride: because KCl is less efficient, adjust your programmed hardness or the KCl mode when you change, and switch back if you return to sodium salt. Form factor matters more than brand loyalty — some compact cabinet units specify pellets rather than large crystals, so check the manual before buying in bulk.
What not to use
Use only salt sold specifically for water softeners. Table salt, ice-melt products, and any salt carrying unrelated additives can introduce impurities or additives your valve isn't designed for. The one useful additive is a rust or iron remover blended into softener salt — that's fine, and helpful if your supply carries iron; just follow the product's own guidance on how to use it.
How much salt you'll actually use
A typical household goes through roughly 40–60 lbs of salt per month, though the real figure swings with your hardness, how much water you use, and how the valve is dosed. Watching that figure over time is also good diagnostics: a sudden jump or drop often points to a stuck valve or a bridge long before your water feels hard again.
